FAQ’s

Isn’t it good to work on my problems rather than bothering people around me and so why seek professional help?

  • This thinking would be like going through a terrible toothache and trying to do away with the dentist. Both these scenarios are similar, as you will only hurt yourself and the existing problem will worsen leading you away from your goal of getting relieved from the pain or the problem.

Sharing our problems can be done best with friends or family…then why pay for it and share it with a stranger?

  • If you have an understanding friend or a family member, who is willing to listen to your problems, you may not need professional help at all. But that may not be enough. A professionally trained person can bring out the cause of what’s bothering you. A friend does not have the skills and training to do so.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

  • Psychologist has a Masters degree in Psychology and a Psychiatrist has M.D in Psychiatry. A psychologist is trained to offer psychotherapy but they do not prescribe any medication and a Psychiatrist  prescribes medicines for treatment of disorders which need medical attention.

Will my information and all the information I share in the sessions remain confidential?

  • Confidentiality is an essential part of therapy and the client information wont be shared  in a few exceptions. Limits to confidentiality include: i) If the therapist suspects abuse or neglect of a minor child, an elderly person or a disabled person. ii) If the client is threatening to harm self or others, or iii) When there is a court order presented to the therapist.

How many sessions are sufficient to over come my problem?

  • The therapeutic sessions depend on certain factors such as: gravity of the issue, involvement of the client and efforts put in during the sessions. Most importantly, the duration of therapy would depend on the client’s adherence put into the selected therapy.

Will the problem come back once I stop coming for counselling sessions?

  • Like every medical treatment, counseling also have a process or a course to be followed. The therapist will guide you with the process and terminate sessions only when you have reached the counseling goal and when you overcome your sustained emotional disturbance. If the counselor does not terminate the session it means that the process is not over. Self – terminating the sessions could resurrect the problems as the treatment was not over.

After I have over come my problem, should I meet you again?

  • Counseling is not a permanent process and the session will be terminated once the counseling goal is met. If you feel the need to discuss any other issue with the counselor that can be done.

Does therapy work?

  • Simple answer…YES, unless you are looking ‘fix-it’ solutions. Therapy can help a person solve significant issues in their life, can greatly reduce and even eliminate symptoms of depression and anxiety, can improve relationships, social skills, and even work performance and motivation. But counseling unfortunately is not a trick done with a magic wand and therapy only works as well as the factors involved like client’s motivation, dedication, and openness, therapists experience and skill, and external factors such as time, resources, and support.

Which is better, therapy or medication?

  • Both therapy and medication have shown effective results in treating mental illness. The type of treatment used depends on the nature of the problem. It is believed that medication and psychotherapy together would be the best approach, especially for more severe conditions.  This combination together is the fastest and has longest-lasting effects.
